tubing i-STAT cartridges

Does anyone have guidelines regarding sending i-STAT cartridges through the pneumatic tube system?  Abbott's response was that there are "no validated studies to show the effects."

Hi Colleen,

I rarely send the cartridges via Pneumatic system, but when I do ....  I wrap them (together) in a package and bubble wrap surrounds them in the tube itself.  I have not had any concerns (resulting values, damage, etc.).

We do not allow cartridges to be sent through pneumatic tubes.

No documentation by the manufacturer, we have no leg to stand on.

We walk them to the units or the units send someone to pick some up.

They are too expensive to mess up.

The pressure on the system may affect the calibrant reagents inside the cartridges.

Since Abbott have not done any documented  study on the effect

of the pneumatic pressure on the cartridges, I would not risk it.

To all,

i have tubed cartridges of all types for as long as I have been using the ISTAT (since 1998 or so) and have never had any issues.

Years ago....and I don't remember what year, I called Abbott and asked about tubing cartridges through the tube system.  We were asked by some of the users if they could get some tubed to them.  I wasn't sure it we could so I called.  I was told at that time by Technical Support that the cartridges could not be tubed.  The person said aside from the possibility of altering results, it could cause a lot of bubbles and pressure build up in the cartridge.  So with that said we don't tube cartridges.  They say nothing about in their documents, unfortunately.
