To folks who are switching to epoc:
Are you switching switching to epoc so you will have the BMP portion?
Will you turn off the blood gas portion?
Are you interfacing them?
We are keeping the i-STATs (for now) but we only run CG8 and Creatinines. We pulled the CHEM8 cartridges from 4 locations.
The letter did not say "recall", it stated that the G3+ cartridge had "not be characterized by the FDA", which really doesn't mean anything. When I've called my Abbott rep, they've said that the cartridges can be used until May 2020. However, I called CAP and they said that it "appears" that the G3+ is not FDA approved". I asked why the unclear language, and she said that they have not been able to get a straight answer from Abbott about any approval or recall, or anything. When I talk to Abbott, they blame the FDA, saying that the language in the notices was dictated by the FDA.
I was thinking it was ok to use the G3 until May, but now we will cease using that cartridge as well. Per Lena Portillo at CAP, they have instructed inspectors not to cite if G3+ cartridges are being used, as long as there is a plan for alternative testing. This whole thing has been a major patient harm incident!
I was told we could still use the G3+ cartridge until May, by Abbott
Now I don't know what to do.
STOP! everyone just STOP it! you are all animals!
lol
Debra,
We are interfaced. And remotely program by location. for example the NICU can run everything every time, the ICU will always run gases, but the lytes must be manually selected only as needed for acute situations. most of the general house will run only gases. The test cards are too expensive for us to allow it to be used for stat lytes everywhere. our tube system can turn around lytes in 15 min.
