Glucometer controls

Can anyone tell me how your nursing units are dating glucometer controls? Are you using date opened and expiration date or only expiration date? This is a hot topic at my organization in preparation for Joint Commission. Thanks!

Hi,
I used to give the 'a touch of clear tape' suggestion until someone on either this or another listserve reported having problems due to their infection control dept. or accreditation folks saying it was a 'no no' in clinical environment.
We didn't have issues where I work (so far) but I wanted to be sure we covered that potential for an issue here! Try checking in with your Dept of Epidemiology/Infection Control folks first!
Hi Peggy, yes we were also told here we can't use any tape on these vials as per Joint Commission.
You all have very great ideas! I really like the one that replacing QC every 3 months, in particular. If that is the case and I have a log that indicates it, does it mean the individual QC vial no longer need to be dated? I know that CAP is ok with it, not sure about TJC.
