Nova glucose and neonates

I followed a recent post on Nova Statstrip that spoke to alternate plans, or alternate procedure, when involving neonates. I tried to dig up the goods but was not successful. We do see issues with our babies on the current Abbott meter. We are switching to Nova soon. What is anyone willing to share with me with the Nova meter specific to babies? Or, if you are so inclined, any heads up about the Nova Meters.

Thank you,

The Nova Stat Strip has still not gotten the FDA approval for Neonatal venous samples.  Heel sticks and arterial sample yes.

Hello,

We perform neonatal heel stick testing on the nova meters and use RALS. We have the neonate meters configured with specific reference ranges through RALS.

I am following as we are also switching to NOVA.

Nova provided support to perform a regression analysis study using the lithium heparin microtainers.  The result was a +8 offset in the meter to correct for the negative bias.  The nursery was very supportive of the study and provided 30 samples in the 3 day study.  Everyone is happy!

As Charlene state, be aware of The Nova Stat Strip is not FDA approved for Neonatal venous samples.  Heel sticks and arterial sample yes. And there are no plans to validate this sample type. Options for this sample type we have set up are the iSTAT in departments that have them or send a sample to the lab.

I haven't had issues with the low end of the range on neonates as some have.

For training:
1. The "scanner" is not a scanner - I didn't expect this to be a big deal but the nurses lost their minds over the difference. The barcode scanner is actually a camera. You can't wave it around or try to wand it over the barcode. You have to hold it still like a camera and let it flash. Big learning curve.
2. Something I didn't know they would appreciate - the strip eject button on the back. I don't ever use it but they LOVE it.

Overall I really like the meters, especially once we upgraded to the current model.
