Hello POCT friends, I am beginning a project to interface several POCT instruments to Epic via RALS.  My question is how does your institution result oxygen saturation from the Avoximeter to Epic?  Thank you in advance for your help.

Karen,
We have opted not to interface the AVOX 1000E O2 sat results for the following reasons:
  • No barcode reader - we use a 12 digit patient ID that needs to be manually entered.  It would be fraught with patient ID errors.
  • Often times the docs are checking to see if they are in the right location and judge by the results.  It might not be where they want to be.  They do not necessarily want each result recorded.
  • We have a manual build in EPIC that includes each site and is accompanied by that site's unique reference range.  Some hospitals put a peripheral blood reference range which is not accurate.  They also record the lot number of the cuvette in EPIC as well.  A charge is generated for each site where testing is performed.

Thank you Andrea.  Our patient ID's are not as long.  This is a good point.  We only have one cathlab/location where these will be used.

We are interfaced though Telcor to Epic.  We have Lantronix devices to connect the 9 pin printer output to our network.  Using Telcor helps to catch any potential patient ID errors (ours are 9 digits) since it checks against the ADT.

We are interfaced to RALS but not RALS to Epic.  That gives us the ability to monitor QC.  One of the major issues for us was the manual entry of patient ID.  Too much chance for error.
