LeadCare II

Hello - I received a letter from our state DOH today regarding our LeadCare - They sent a Lead Testing Quick Guide for the Magellan LeadCare II  and in their disposal section it says:
1. Use an estimated four drops (40uL each) of 7.5% NaHCO3 neutralizing solution, to neutralize remaining contents in reagent vial to a pH between 2.0-12.5. (I just tested the pH of the solution - it's 1.0!)
2. Dispose the solution along with other materials in bio-hazard container.

I thought maybe the LeadCare instructions had changed and I didn't know (we haven't been neutralizing anything) so I checked an open box and the insert doesn't say anything about disposal other than into biohazard.

My question: do you neutralize every LeadCare vial you use? Is this standard procedure that I just never knew about? Where do you get NaHCO3 drops?

I'm going to email the DOH as well but wanted to know if anyone was already doing this~

Hi Jill
I have never heard of neutralizing the solution once the test is finished.  We do not do this at the office that performs this test.  I will be interested in what Magellan has to say.

Jill, what state do you work in?  The neutralization process is news to me.  It must be specific to your DOH.

Hi Terry - I'm in Washington state. I'm going to email them (DOH) and try to find out more about this.

Update: I emailed Washington DOH yesterday and today received a reply stating the inclusion of the neutralizing step was an error and this is NOT required in our state (I wonder what state it is required in). (Not that we can run the test anyway - all of our kits were the recalled lots and new lots are on backorder)
