Where do POCCs fit in the CLIA classifications of personnel?
Are we considered to be Technical Supervisors? Technical Consultants? Clinical Consultants?
I would think that some of it depends of the degree of education held by the POCC.
Thoughts?

CLIA classifications are test method complexity specific.
Waived testing does not have a CLIA defined role. As in, you do not need to meet an education requirement for performing competencies with waived testing platforms.
Moderate testing does have CLIA defined role, technical consultant (TC). To meet the TC classification, one needs to have a bachelors degree (BS) in the sciences and have 2 years of experience in that testing methodology. For instance, a BS in Nursing qualifies but a BA in Nursing does not. This CLIA defined role (for CAP/Cola accreditation needs to be delegated by the medical director) Some facilities define with job title and some facilities define individually. In any event, you need to show that the medical director states it is okay for person XYZ to perform the CLIA defined roles associated with TC.
High complexity testing does have two CLIA defined roles, Technical Supervisor (TS) and General Supervisor (GS). Both of these have educational requirements and are a little more clear for POC than for other departments in the main laboratory. TS must be a BS with a specific number of years experience and the GS must have an associates degree with a specific number of years experience in that testing methodology. TS has more duties than the GS. I see the GS a helper to the TS by completing competency items for them. Some people get a little confused with why a BS for moderate and AS for High. It becomes more clear with understanding what role/tasks you play with the department = what CLIA defined role you get assigned.
Short story: IF you have waived testing only, there is no CLIA defined role. IF you have moderate, you will most likely be a TC. That is provided you qualify by degree and experience. IF you do high complexity testing at POC (unlikely) you would either be a TS or GS.
Hope this helps.
