CLIA Training requirement for multiple hospital system

Hello all,

I have a question and I'm looking for some guidance regarding training users on the i-Stat for multiple hospitals. Our nursing administration wants to streamline the process of training for getting users who are new hires to receive initial access and for float staff like agency and resource pool to get signed off for multiple locations. Currently our professional development department does not include it in their initial orientation and we have users sign up for the class themselves to come to an initial training class with us (the POC dept) if they need access. We have them go through the class at each hospital campus and get a 6 month and annual the first year and annual thereafter. So my first question is if this class for initial training is needed at each campus or if one class is good enough for a float nurse to have done once and just get the visuals needed for the 6 month and annual competency at each hospital? The other question is how anyone else in a multiple campus system offers their training.

Do the other locations have a different CLIA numbers ? If so, yes, they will require separate competencies.

For offsite trainings, we coordinate with the unit leadership to schedule initial, 6month, and annuals.

Hi Danielle, thanks for the reply. Yes, each hospital has their own CLIA number. What nursing is looking for is where it is written, other than in our POC policy, that they have to take the initial training class (a one hour overview on meter operation and handling) at each location. I can't find that to say that they do or don't have to. The visual competency at each location isn't as big a deal for them to handle as much as how we grant initial access.

MAS POC CAP Checklist POC.06910 Competency Assessment-Non Waived

The competency of personnel performing non waived testing is assessed at the required frequency at the laboratory (CAP/CLIA number) where testing is performed.

We apply this to waived testing as well.

Thank you. That was exactly what I was looking for! I just saw your reply as I was searching through my copy from our recent inspection.
