Beta hydroxybutyrate

Our system uses Vidan's Lucidplus device for beta hydroxybutyrate. We do the test in the laboratory, but it could probably be done at POC. Certainly better than sending to a reference lab, as this test is critical for management of some patients.

I'm not sure, since this was done by the lab and not the POCT department. It was implemented due to the sudden removal of the acetone tablets that we had been using, so there was no current method to compare it to. Since it's waived, there are no specific regulations regarding implementation, so I would imagine running QC would be sufficient. I would check the manufacturer's instructions for validation. You could also compare specimens to the test you're currently sending out.

We use the Abbott Freestyle Precision Pro hospital meter with the Ketone strip.  We have it interfaced with our QML and the units are liking it.  We currently have it in our ED, PICU, Endo unit in house and our Endo Clinic in house.  I think we will be expanding to offer it at our Endo satellites.  Since it's originally a hospital glucometer (we don't use it as a glucometer) it has all the lockouts and scanning features that we need.

We don't use the Freestyle for glucose so the critical ill patient wouldn't apply.  That should be just for glucose.
