Color Discrimination Testing

Just curious as to how you're meeting the CAP standard GEN.55400, Visual Color Discrimination testing.  I try to catch the new hires when I present at orientation, but it's a challenge.  I use a book with the Pseudo-Isochromatic plates and a form we created.  I would like to do this electronically during other online pieces of their orientation and have Education involved.  Is anyone doing this electronically or have a good system in place?  Thanks!

Oy! We used to do this at one of our hospitals as part of New Employee Orientation (NEO). The CAP question only states that the users must be able to discern the relevant colors for testing. When they do their NEO, we have them do a urine dipstick and a stool occult blood. If they get the correct answer, then we know that they can discern the necessary colors for testing. Occasionally we get someone who fails; we inform their manager and don't allow them to perform that test.

Check to see if this test is part of the exam for new employees.  Employee Health does this for all new hires at my facility.

Similar to Robin, our employee Health screens all new hires for color blindness.  Then in theory the manager is informed so they do not perform any tests that require it.

My wagon is hitched to Kathleen's response.
Yes, our nursing orientation 'may' do color bind testing. Or... do they sometimes but not other times, eg RNs rate color blind testing yet medical assistants who do the bulk of manual WT do not get color blind tested because they are not "nurses"? So confusing!
I rely on the theory for manual waived tests that if they prove they are competent (to perform the manual test that involves 'color determination') through our assessment process, they 'passed' the color blindness question.
Disclaimer: our WT is not under CAP but I'd stick to this approach if we did have WT under CAP.
