Scanning unregistered patients into the glucometer

Hello,
For sites that require scanning of patient ID and do not allow manual entry, what process do you use for unregistered patients (ED, newborns)? Do you use a dummy generic number, or do you have a process for entering a unique patient ID? Thanks for your insights!

We prefer scanning, but will allow manual entry in case the barcode doesn't scan.  They are prompted on the meter to verify entry matches the financial # printed above the barcode.  For emergency cases not yet registered, staff enters all 7's, then completes a form once they know the correct Pt ID and sends to our office.  Newborns have their unique ID of all 5's if not yet registered.  Works well.  Email me if you would like to see our form.

We generally see this in our Transport and Emergency/Code calls.
We gave each team a series of 5 barcodes that can be utilized which code for that particular team using the barcode which is on their jumpbags.  They then have to fill out a Safety Report to POC stating the patient info and why they scanned the generic barcode.
We are also toying with a generic Floor barcode for staff but have not found a good way to implement that (for staff that forget their badge and can't scan their info in).

This is the procedure we use for ER for unregistered patient:
For Emergency Point -of -Care testing:
Manually enter combination of Date, time and Room #  into the instrument for patient ID ( 12 digits minimum)
COMPLETE GLUCOSE/I-STAT FORM.  After patient is registered, attach a patient Label for  true patient identification on the form so the test result can be reconciled and sent to the correct electronic medical record. COMPLETE  FORM BEFORE END OF YOUR SHIFT
Send completed and SIGNED form to the Main  laboratory for reconciling POC test result with true patient identity WITHIN 24 HOURS

We don't allow manual entry of PID or OID.  We have dedicated unique barcodes for each unit that are scanned if there is no patient barcode available.  Our biggest user of  this is the PICU as they go on the codes.  We provide them with cards they keep in the bag,  they scan it as the patient ID and complete the info on the card and tube it back to us.  We match it up on the backside in QML when we get it.  If we have a scanned barcode without the info we email the operator and manager to get the patient info.
Example of PICU card.docx

We do something similar to what Adonica described above. We make our own unique barcode forms, using a free barcode site. We then supply the forms to the ED- they keep them with the glucometer supplies. They fill it out and send it to us via the tube, and we do the match up and uploading at this end.
They are also allowed to use these barcodes for EPOC testing on unregistered patients, as well.
Here's what they look like:

Gloria, in case you didn't know it, the Avery.com website lets you create barcodes in sequence alot easier than any other site I've found.  It's my new best friend lol.

Thanks, Adonica!

Thank you all for the comments and shared forms, this has been very helpful!!

What a great idea! What website do you all use to generate your own barcodes? I am new to this POCC position and trying to find a solution for these results that come into the que. Thank you!

Jennifer, here is the link to the one we use:

Our operators use 9111111111111 for traumas or newborns, then must fill out patient correction form and we reconcile in Telcor.  We use barcodesinc.com as well to generate barcodes for training/surveys/patient correlations, etc.
