ID NOW Patient ID

We recently interfaced our ID NOWs in the emergency department to RALS and we are having problems with staff scanning the incorrect patient ID.  Our patient stickers have 2 different barcodes on them.  We have educated and put graphics on the scanners indicating which barcode to scan but they are still scanning the wrong one.  Some staff have also been scanning their own badges for the patient ID.  RALS was not able to help us with a configuration to prevent this and we are currently working with Abbott to try and configure the barcode scanners to only accept a certain number of digits.  Anyone that has had a similar experience, what did you do to fix or prevent this?

Do you have your ID NOW configuration setup in RALS or is it set to default? Are you utilizing the positive patient ID feature in the RALS device configuration setting?

Hi Mistie, unfortunately it seems we are unable to utilize the positive patient ID feature because our barcode format contains leading zeros that have to be stripped off.

Hi Kari -
I am right in your backyard call me  518-612-2090.
I had the leading zeros stripped off, turned on the positive pt ID.  I also worked with IT to have special POC patient labels printed at the bottom row of the page of chart labels.

Kari, you brought up a cause of indigestion no amount of OTC drugs can mask.
Operators who scan badge ID barcodes for patient ID.
(For those of us who cannot get it sorted between middleware and scanner).

I have been assuming operator A uses ID NOW. Fails to log off. Operator B rushes up, hits 'Run Test'. Does not read screen which says the next step is 'scan or enter patient ID'.

Operator B's brain is used to scanning operator ID first, so operator ID gets scanned. Instead of patient ID. The test is off and running.

Anyone come up with another reason for seeing so many badge IDs for operator ID? (other than they forgot to carry the registration label along but then they have to spend the time to order/enter edit result so I don't see how that works out for them saving time).

Thanks for insight!
Peggy
