Disposal of instruments not in use anymore

What does your organization do when you have an instrument that has been discontinued and needs to be disposed of.

Good question! Curious about what others are expected to do.

On a device that the manufacturer will not take back, I'm expected to delete any patient data/memory/results, disinfect it and disable it in some way making it unusable. Then I dispose of it in regular trash if it does not contain an internal reagent source. I don't currently have devices that do have reagents internal to the instrument but if that were the case, I'd have to schedule a pickup with our institution's Environmental Health & Safety office.

We have a box in our maintenance department to place all electronic devices for disposal.
