Student/Waived testing

I am looking to see if there are facilities that allow students the same access as employees for the glucometers?

Currently, the students go through a training class, like employees, and then are given the access in the middleware once the training papers are sent to me. The students should not be alone on the floor and should be following an employee at all times.

I am still learning the different areas of my position, and this is one I had not looked into up until this point. Are there any standards about student testing for CAP, and can others share their process or policy on student training (I am wondering if following the same as an employee with be ok)? Or is this something that I should try to do away with? It is no hinderance on me.

We allow students to perform waived testing as long as the proper documentation is done. Mostly they do fingerstick glucoses. They are classified as either working student PCA's or practicum students shadowed by by their proctor. Students can also do fingersticks if the nurse is in the room watching.

NO.
Nursing students are not allowed to post live results.
If the person is a "working student", then training is done by Nursing Practice under the job title/position they have.  So , if a nursing student is  working as an employee, a PCT in the ED.  Then they are in-serviced and trained by the ED Nurse education as an employee. Otherwise, they do not preform testing under their student status.  We assign privileges by location.

Our nursing students go through the same training as any onboarding clinical staff who needs to be able to use a glucose meter.  My POC glucose policy is applicable to employees, travelers, and students. We only give staff access in 6 month increments, so they would need to go through the training again if they get hired.  It's a waived test.  The nursing regulations allow students to perform much more daunting tasks, I'm sure.

Per CAP Personnel Requirements by Testing Complexity :
WAIVED: No specific requirements outlined in the CAP or CLIA regulations, however each laboratory must ensure waived testing personnel meet facility defined minimum requirements and have records of training and competency assessment

We do not allow our students access to any testing. They do not get onboarded or entered in our HR or ELM the same as an employee so that would not work for our interfaced operator management anyway. I'm not going to manually assign and sign off on elearns and training for the dozens of students we get every year.
A student, even if they did have access, we would require supervision 100% of the time anyway and there is no way to monitor that.  Even our student "interns", who are more like employees, have in their job description that they have to perform all tasks under supervision of an RN.  This is one of those skills that can be easily learned upon hire so there's not a lot of knowledge gained or lost by not having access.
